System32/Config Corrupt

Hey everyone,

I seem to be in a bit of a jam. I installed the new catalyst 8.1 drivers, did a reboot, and came up with a message in windows that says something on the lines of :

System32/Config/ Corrupt or missing ...

I tried " Last known good configuration "
that didn't help.

I'm currently following this guide:
http://support.microsoft.com/d...x?scid=kb;en-us;307545

The problem is, I can copy all the files, EXCEPT for C:\Windows.0\System32\Config\System.

I tried to copy it in vista (I have a dual boot system) as well, but it didnt work.
I'm not sure howto go about copying the file.. Any suggestions are welcome.

Edit:
It seems there was a "backup folder" already within the system32/config directory. But these files are from augest. Is it still good enough to use in the backup?

It's ok, I did the whole guide, I'm back in windows. I'm going to run system restore back to a previous point just to be safe.

That's an easy way to get to a given point of time, and is the right thing to do in this instance. Also, if you didn't already, chkdsk on the volume in question is wise too.

Actually the last time I ran into this same error, the hard drive was developing bad sectors and just happened to hit one of the registry files.
