system with win 98 running slow

explorer is writing out to the hard drive (i think)... never stops..slowing down system..cannot run scan disk..will run for hours recd message windows or other program writing out to hard disk, yet nothing is running on the system...cntl alt delete shows explorer ..cannot stop it shuts down system.. same problem when it comes back up. ran all phases of pc doctor shows no problem tried to load new version of windows 98 said disk in use close all programs..all programs are closed this started to happen when i hung up and had to hit the reset button to reboot when i hang up.....please anyone with any ideas on how to fix this problem is welcome thanks....:disgust:
 
If you have everything closed out and explorer is only program runnin, try disablin screensavers and/or turn off any power schemes....if still not able to run scandisk try runnin it in safemode.
As far as hard drive acitivity, how much memory do you have in machine?
