System Upgrade: Suggestions

Hi all !!

After much market research and advise from Hardware vendors in my area I have narrowed my serch to the following :

I am going for an upgrade of my existing P4 2.66Ghz/MSI Mobo/1GB RAM to a

Gigabyte-GA-8I945GZME-RH Mother Board
1 GB DDR-II RAM
Intel Pentium D Processor 820+ 2.80GHz/800MHz FSB/2MB L2 Cache

PLease suggest me if my choice is OK or should I change some thing.....

Need suggestions / advise fast....

What is your budget?
Since you're basically moving to a whole new platform, its probably better to save a little more and get a Core 2 Duo setup.

I would definately go with a Core 2 Duo platform instead of the Pentium D. In addition, I would choose an AM2 platform over a Pentium D if $$ is an issue.

Get a decent 680i motherboard and ram, cheap CPU upgrade to C2D > Getting AM2 motherboard

If budget is an issue, then you can get into an AMD Athlon X2 (AM2) platform easier than a C2D platform. If you compare prices for both platforms, you will see that this is the plain fact. If budget is not an issue, then my first choice would be C2D.

No Budget is not an issue...

the main issue is support from AMD... My earlier rig was AMD Athlon 64Bit.. some problem with the fan and CPU heated up and started hanging..... AMD dealer admitted to a problem witht he fan ... agreed to replace CPU but took 5 weeks to do so...

my issue is only with service...

please detail why I should be better off with Core2Duo than Pentium D....

Core 2 Duo is Intel's latest processor family. It is has a new architecture and as a result, runs faster, runs cooler, and is more efficient than the Pentium D processors. Below is a chart/tool from Tom's Hardware that provides a comparison of the various processors.

If you use this tool to compare the two, you will see that the C2D E6600 clocked at 2.4 GHz beats the fastest Pentium D (Pentium D 960) clocked at 3.6 GHz in every benchmark.

You would be crazy not to go with a C2D system at this point in time. Not to mention 2GB of RAM.

You missed my point. It would be better to have a nice conroe platform (solid nForce 680i motherboard and 2GB of CAS4 DDR2-800) and use a cheap ass do-for-now CPU and forego the C2D chip initially.

If budget isn't an issue I'd suggest this

E6600 or Xeon 3060 processor
Asus P5N32-E SLI
Patriot PDC22G6400LLK - 2x1GB/DDR2-800/4-4-4-12/2.1v
