System Tray replacement

When you replace your system tray for any Windows OS, this being Windows 7, would the icons on the new system tray still change colors or animate when there is a alert? For example my rss reader gets a little message on the icon and so on.

I want to replace my Windows 7 system tray only with something better but wanted to make sure I still get to see the icon change like it does on the official windows system tray.

I don't think you actually can. what I am doing is hiding it and then putting a new system tray where the old one was bascially.

If you can actually replace it that would be cool.
