System transplant

I've got a 3 year old Dell 4100, WinMe, PIII, 128mb ram. Not much to brag about but my kids are little and I use it mostly for word processing/spreadsheets. The power supply is starting to make noises but I've learned (since I started reading these forums) that the power supply/mobo are unique and can't merely be swapped for a new standard one.

I'm thinking of getting a cheap case/PS, mobo, an XP 2000+ and 512mb of ram. Then I'll take the hard drive, video, sound, floppy, CD/DVD and CD burner out of the old Dell and put them in the new case/cpu/mobo. I figure that will be about $250.

Someday I'll build a new system but for now I'm trying to keep the old one moving along with some improvements. I know I can buy a new PS and use a Dell adapter cable from QuietPC but I want an excuse to upgrade a little bit.

You may also wonder about the new ram. I figure if I buy some good PC3200 in that size I can use it in my future new system. This is based on my guess that a 3 year old 128mb stick won't work in a new mobo. If that is incorrect would someone be able to tell me how to find out if I can use it?

Here's the question. When the system boots up after the transplant and sees an AMD and new mobo will it cause any problems? If so, what can I do before to avoid that?

I'm thinking it won't make a difference to the operating system but I've learned never to assume anything when working on a computer.

Thanks for the help.

Chances are that when you move the hard drive to the new motherboard, it will have problems. One thing you can do that will increase the chances of it transfering successfuly is to go in to device manager prior to transfering it, and uninstall everything, especialy the hard drive controllers. Not sure how well Win ME will like moving to another motherboard, cause I gave up on win ME after only having it for 2 weeks and went back to 98SE.

You will have to reinstall when transplanting from an intel chipset to the VIA ot nVidia on the AMD board. (But that gives you a chance to get beyong ME!)
