Say I have a domain setup, in one domain with mutiple DCs and I backup its system state data on one DC. Can I do the restoration to any DC or does it have to be back to the original DC where I did the backup?

BTW, each DC has their own system state data or is there one system state data for the entire domain?

Thx.

The system state backup contains "domain info" as well as computer specific data like drivers for your hardware etc. Futhermore: the operations master roles are for sure not the same on all DC´s and therefore another good reason to not use the same backup. So i don´t think there is a such thing as an "entire domain system state" when running multiple DC´s.

But there shouldn´t be needed any system state backup for each and all DC´s since they replicate to each other. This gives you a redundancy if one DC fail totally. Just build up your server again, make it an additional DC in the domain an let the other DC´s replicate back and you are back in buisiness!

Oh so I see, the purpose of the system state data backup then is to restore a DC that went down, once it gets new AD information replicated to it it will be up to date.

BTW, one more thing, do I have to do a restoration locally on the same DC where the backup took place or can I do it over a network? I'm assuming not?....

Thx.
