System sounds gone

A friend of mine just installed a Sony CRX140E 8432 CD RW and after installing the Sony software his system sounds stops working. You can go to the folder that they are stored in and play them by double clicking the file but they will not play as a sound event, like when the computer starts up. If you go to the control panel and choose the Sounds tab and try to play one of the .wav's, you get the error message "Windows cannot play the file. It may be damaged or may not be a valid sound file". .wav files are currently associated with Windows Media Player. If he un-installs the Sony software, then everything works. By the way, with the software installed the burner works and so does all other audio functions except system sounds.
