Still one of the creepiest games to play, especially the longer you play it in a session. You wouldn't think it would be with the outdated graphics, but the effective contrast of silence and music, harsh sound effects, semi-random spawning of enemies, psi "ghosts", voice recordings, suspenseful story, and just the dead atmosphere of a ship still make it a compelling FPS/RPG hybrid.

I'm buying it on Steam for sure when I get home.

Problem with this is Steam releases of old games are very rarely optimized to run on modern hardware and OSes. GoG releases, OTOH are. The work GoG does to get older games running on new OSes is more than worth the price difference, not even taking into consideration the DRM issue.

In this case it's not an issue, as Dark engine games have been getting patched recently by some unknown person speculated to be a past developer with the source code. They work great on modern machines.

If you spin it like that, no.

But if you spin it:

Buying another game, or any future titles on Steam when you have the ability to turn your collection around and use GOG for your DRM-free gaming needs in the future, yes, you should look at your current STEAM collection as sunk costs.


I know it's hard to look at it that way, especially when you've got 100+ titles on there, but you're making the same mistake most big businesses make.


Go DRM free when you have the option.

It gets easier with every subsequent purchase.


Hell, you can even burn the .exe file GOG gives you and keep it for ages and ages. Remember when that was a piracy-only type of deal? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

It is. It might be more spooky if a sock mod were made for it, too.

I'm going to try these patches. I couldn't get my copy of SS2 to work, awhile back, in Win7 64-bit. If it works with these newer ones, I won't need to wait for a GoG sale on it, which I've been itching for, after trying to play it on my laptop (it worked, but it's not the same thing, you know?). When I have the original CD in my closet, it's a lot harder to repurchase .

The New Dark patch is already included with GoG's version. Steam's version might not and if it does, it'll be loaded with DRM.

I can't understand how people would willingly forfeit their consumer rights for $3.
