System Shock 2 on XP

I've patched System Shock 2 with the official Patch 1 which I suppose would solve any XP problems. The game loads up, menus are ok, but when I start the level itself it just bombs out to the desktop. I think there's an error message box but I cannot read it since the screen is blanked out, but I press Enter and the game exits.

A few times however I did get into the game engine itself, but it freezes quite often. Once it froze when I tried quick saving.

Anyone else tried playing SS2 under XP and have these issues too?

Have you tried win98 compatibility mode?

note: I have no idea if that will work; it's just a suggestion.

It worked on 2k pro... haven't tried XP.

I got so far but lost my save file during a reformat. Good game though. I had some mod that updated some of the models to new, high poly versions that looked a lot better.

There is an unofficial fixed executable which is supposed to work under XP/2000. I can't remember where I originally downloaded it from but if you want me to send it to you, let me know.

I have a Radeon 9800 pro. Maybe this is what's causing the freezes/crashes. Fixing the EXE should only deal with cases where the game refuses to start at all.

It's ran fine for me under XP with a 9800. AFAIK, I was just using the latest official patch, and I didn't have to use the W2K/XP patch.

Thanks for that. I'll PM you with the contact info.

Thanks for the encouragement. I've actually played it before on my older rig, but laid it off after getting pwn3d once too often. After finishing Deus Ex on my new rig, though, the urge to beat SS2 is back. :D

There's a texture memory fix on this page
Scroll down the page to where it says Tuesday October 5th and follow the instructions.
The link at the top of the page didn't work for me.

I had the same problem too. The way i fixed it was going to the compatibility tab and selecting "disable visual themes". I might have also had it set to Win98 compat mode, but it was the visual themes checkbox that got it working for me.
