System resources?

Platypus

Lifer
I just installed a 256mb ram chip, thus bringin my ram to 320mb.
But, my system resources are only like 42% free.
I thought adding more ram would help out my resources? Everything runs faster which would suggest the ram helped, but I dont get why system resources are so low? Can I fix this somehow?

yes thats what it says.
I do have a lot of programs running on startup though. Would my resources be higher if I started these programs manually after bootup?

Running on startup:

ICQ
MSN
ZoneAlarm(that is a ram-raper)
RoadRunner diagnostics.

if it's icq 2000, that's a ram whore too, try to stop these from loading on startup, i have 128 megs of ram and i have 72% resources free with winamp, powerstrip, and aim open at the same time.
BTW, do you have aim, or aol?

AIM of course, hehe I wouldnt need roadrunner diagnostics with AOL 😉
Would starting ICQ2000 after bootup help this problem?

go ctrl-alt-del and delete every program bar explorer and then see how much resorcues you have free. If it is still low, click explorer and end task and when the shutdown prompt comes up, click cancel. after about 20 secs it will come up with the dialog saying that explorer is not responding etc. end the task and explorer will reboot minus all the crap that comes with it. now check your system resouces

yeah, after boot up, do what Shalmanese said, and ctrl+alt+delete, close everything then check, and tell us how many resources are free.if that doesnt work, check to see if Virtual Memory is enabled.

You can see exactly what is being loaded to run at startup using MSCONFIG.EXE.

You can also use StartUp Control Panel, which you may find easier to use.

Due to Win9x's system architecture, adding more RAM does not necessarily mean that you will have more resources.

Uh, I need zonealarm dude...What is still image monitor? do I need that?
Here is the list of stuff im not sure I need :

1)StillImage Monitor
2)Iomega Drive Icons
3)LVcoms
4)Pointer32
5)Adobe Gamma loader
6)winmodem.101

OK, here we go.

The memory architecture in Win9x still has a hold-over from the bad old days of 16-bit Windows 3.x.

The "system resources" value is the lower amount of resources of two 16-bit 64KB stacks, one called the GDI, the other called the USER. You can only run a limited amount of programs because the stacks themselves are limited. A program may take up heaps of RAM, but regardless of size, it must take up some space in the stack (which as I said is limited).

Effectively, the amount of RAM that you have does not really help system resources. It may make small increases....say you get an extra few % going from 128MB to 256MB, but it is not proportional to the amount of RAM that you have added.

For this reason, people go around saying stuff like Windows 9x won't use more than 96MB of RAM or some such. While they are wrong, they are not completely out in cuckoo land either.

Sorry....that's a really ham-fisted explanation, but it's the best that I can come up with for the moment.
