System requirements for a server?

Hi people,

I was wondering what would work best as a server for a simple website to be hosted? I have three older PCs collecting dust. I mainly want to know if this system would be okay for a server with a high speed cable connection, and a decent sized hard drive? I was thinking apache and php, with mysql.

PC:

HP PC with 48MB ram (max), AMD K6 233MHz w/ MMX

Your thoughts?

Install * Linux, up the ram a bit.
And go.

Be sure to verify that your ISP will allow you to host a web site on your cable connection. Some block inbound Port 80. Even if there's no block, if hosting violates your TOS, they could disconnect you.

NeuroMancer, thank you for the help 🙂 I would like to learn linux one day... but there are soooooo many flavours.

Dang! The system only accepts a maximum of 48MB, and there are no BIOS upgrades for the system. The system also has an 8GB HD size limitation (I mean I could partition a larger drive into 8GB sections).


I may go with another spare system that has a celeron 950MHz with 256 MB of ram. That way I could at least go with Win2K

I strongly suggest DSL, Damn Small Lniux, for this system. It's designed to be easy on your hardware. You could pick up a simple 'Linux for Dummies' book. For simple web serving, it should be quite adequate.

Every time I try messing with something as old as your K6, I regret it. The Celeron 950MHz box with 256MB of RAM should be able to run anything you need to run just fine, including XP.

My 800mhz PIII with 128MB SDRAM running Windows 2k fits my server needs just fine.
