System refuses to shut down, only restarts

I've been looking for the solution to this problem for a while, and it seems like other people have had this problem. Everytime I shut down through windows, it restarts. I can't get it to shut down properly. These issues started when I reset my CMOS through a jumper on my Gigabyte GA-7DXR. I believe I have an award bios. I am pretty sure this is either a bios setting that I can't find or something on my motherboard, but I can't for the life of me find it. I tried unchecking the "Automatically Restart" box in windows Power management...no luck.

this has happened to me before. it happened to be a faulty ide cable. try removing all your cd/dvd drives. basically just run your system with bare minimum and see if it still turns off.

that would not be fixing his problem.

i don't understand why a faulty ide cable would do this, and why it has only started to happen after i reset the cmos. are you sure that was your problem?

This sounds like one of those quirky windows problems with no definite solution. The best bet is probably to see if the system still does that after a fresh installation of windows.

Good. So you've eliminated the possibility that it is a software issue, now it is limited to hardware. Isolate the problem by removing everything possible, and see if you still have the problem. If the problem is still there, then the problem exists within the things that you did not eliminate. If the problem is not present anylonger, then it must be something that you had removed from the equation. At that point you add things one by one until you've determined the issue.

Its called troubleshooting.

thanks for that crash course...but dammit i already tried everything! i'm convinced it's a bios setting that i am overlooking. It's an award bios...

You removed optical drives, extra hard drives, floppy drive, sound card, every pci/agp card except video, disabled almost everything in the BIOS, disconnected motherboard LEDs/Switch connectors, USB connectors, Firewire connectors, and still had the issue?

It could be a bad hard drive. It could be a bad IDE cable. It could be a short in just about any connector that goes into the motherboard. It could be bad RAM, could be bad onboard sound. Could be a short in the parallel port on the board.

Gotta narrow it down by taking care of everything, and seeing if its fixed. Go from there. If it isn't fixed after taking just about everything out of the equation, then the problem exists with the equipment that is still in the equation.

before wasting my time doing all of that, don't you think it makes more sense to look at when the problem started? it's when i cleared my cmos...i think that it's something in the bios because of this fact. it just seems unlikely that it's bad hardware, although i might have jostled some cables. I'll work on connections tomorrow.

It would take me 5 minutes, or less. Less time than you've spent thinking about and posting what you've posted thus far in this thread.
