Can you guys pleases recomend any parts I should get? I want to build a small linux server to be used as a router and a file server. I'm planning to use the Mandrake 7.1 distribution. I also want it to be inexpensive, less than $600 would be nice. I just need 2 nics, 1HD, the mobo, RAM, and CD-ROM. Stability is very important for me so keep that in mind. 😉 Thanks guys I really appreciate any help you can give me. 🙂

thats a dangerous propisition, its best to have nothing on your Router/Firewall that can be attached to. doubling it as a File Server is even worse! cause now all your stuff is on it. Better to get an old 486 or pentium and set up a Linux IPMASQ and then put the server in a DMZ.

BTW, almost anything you build your rig with will be 100 times more stable than Win9x or NT.
Any BX board with a celeron, or EPoX mvp3g-m with a K6 will do just fine. be sure to tweek the drives with the hdparm utility, will give you a good amount more of performance.

Well the Linksys is good for routing and portforwarding but only uses NAT as the "firewalling" stuff, that still doesnt keep your LAN from attacks. a Linux IPMASQ or a 486 w/LRP are excellent firewall/routers, and a Linux server is an excellent choice as well, just be sure you set it up right and check your logs everyday. 🙂
