System randomly powers off with odd noises

So, I've put together a system with the following specs:

Abit NF7-M
Ultra 400MHz DDR 512Mb
Athlon XP 3000+
WD Caviar 200
400W PSU

Here's the problem: while initially installing XP Pro, the machine gets through loading all the drivers, pauses, and then shuts down the system while emitting an alternating-pitch tone through the system speaker.

The initial thought was that it was a simple CPU overheat, and that it had shut itself down, but the BIOS is reporting the CPU holding steady at ~50C, which is well below threshhold.

I swapped out the 512Mb with an old 128Mb which is currently running with no complaints in another system -- same problem.

I've adjusted the FSB/DRAM ratio in the BIOS to the 5/4 (266MHz) setting -- same problem.

Upped the voltage to the chipset -- same problem.

This class of motherboard seems to have some memory issues when overclocking, but I'm just aiming for a standard out-of-box installation. So, any other ideas?

I let my friend use my account to post this question and it turns out that he's just an idiot. He put the heatsink on backwards. Problem solved.
