System only reading 128mb of my 256 stick

I have an Abit BE6 original Motherboard with 2 crucial 128 PC133 cas2 sticks. I found a 256 (pc133) stick at work and put it in the last slot but when I boot, it is reading 384 instead of 512. Any thoughts?

thanks,

mattlock

Try taking out all the 128mb stick's and just put in the 256. If it works, try putting the 128mb where the 256mb was when the 256mb was only reading it as 128mb.

Well..I am totally confused now...I tried removing the other sticks and put just the 256 in solo but it still says 128 when I boot. It's as clear as day written on the stick...PC133256MB....but apparently it is only 128. Am i missing something here?

That ram must not be fully compatible with BX chipset. I had bought 256 mb generic ram before which worked in via chipset but in a BX mobo showed 128 mb as you described.

That DIMM uses so-called "High Density" memory. (Stupid name, I know.) Usually those chips don't work in older BX boards, but will work in newer Via chipset-based boards, and probably Intel 815x boards too.

check the bios, I have an SD-11 that only picked up one side of my 256. flashed the bios, then I got all of it.

Yup, had that problem too. Older mobos only recognize half of two-bank DIMMS. I put a 128 meg stick in my crappy HP work machine (Celery 700), and it only recognizes 64 megs. Sucks.
