Howdy I have a problem regarding a ECS P6STM motherboard that was taken from the office to be used at home. The system worked perfectly, but now nothing is coming on to the monitor.

It uses a Socket 370 CPU socket, and integrated SIS630E chipset. The system has everything installed, Hard Drive, FDD, 256MB of SD-RAM, and a CD-ROM.

Now when I connect all of the cables and turn the system on and the monitor, nothing happens, I do not hear the hard drive spin up, nor does the monitor come on. The monitor's little LED flashes green, but nothing appears on the screen.

I've tried a different monitor, but the same problem existed. Tried to install a video card, and nothing happened, both screens still showed no signs of life other than the little green LEDs flashing.

The other thing I noticed is that the system would not power down when the power button was pushed. The only way to power the system off is the power switch on the back of the PSU.

Has anyone got any ideas as to what could be wrong? There are no beeps that would alert me to something being wrong... I am stumped.

thanks,

It sounds like something may have come loose in shipment. I would reseat the memory, cpu and all internal cables. When nothing spins up, it is usually a bad connection especially when the system worked before it was moved.

If it still won't work, try taking the motherboard out of the case, lay it on cardboard, and give it only the essential items: keyboard (in the correct port), one memory module, the CPU & heatsink/fan, and the power supply itself. Instead of using the case's power wiring, trip the Power Button pins directly using a metal object to make momentary contact between the two pins.

If it won't work like that, try a different memory module, a different power supply and a different CPU insofar as possible. If it does work like that, then add devices one at a time and test them. If it works with all the devices while it's outside the case, then check to ensure that the case doesn't have metal studs that aren't matching up with holes in the motherboard, because that might be causing shorts.

hmmm, thanks for the suggestions.

I tried a different memory module and still have the same problems. I did dissconnect all of the cables to the HD and CD-ROM and FDD.

All that is conected is the PSU cable to the motherboard, cpu and hsf and memory.

Still not getting anything to post to the screen. I thought that if I removed the memory modules it might start beeping to let me know that no memory is installed, but it did not even beep or do anything differently.

I removed the cpu and re-installed it as well as the hsf. Usually when you power on a computer is it not supposed to beep?

thanks,

Try it outside the case if you feel comfortable doing that. It helps to eliminate a few more variables. The power supply's fan does start spinning, correct?

Thanks for all the help! I figured out what the problem was, the Reset button was stuck, and it was stuck in the pressed position. I fixed it with a little screw driver to pop it out, and the system fires up beautifully :)
