One simple thing to try first: unplug the unit from the power cord, wait a few minnutes, and then plug back in. Try the front start button again - it might work.
I've done this successfully several times when my machine will not re-start. The trick to remember is that "Off" is not off. The mobo still has power to some circuits and the BIOS is monitoring the front power pushbutton (and maybe some other things like a modem) to see whether it should start up again. But if the BIOS gets confused and can't do this, it will not repond properly. A complete cold power-off then power-on can reset it all, provided you wait a little in the middle to let the PSU capacitors' output die off and truly deprive the mobo of all power.
