System mailbox in Exchange 2000...can default password be changed?

First off, I'm *assuming* that the system mailbox is the default mailbox for the domain if Exchanged can't find the user.

Assuming that, could I pull the messages down using outlook and then forward them off to the correct user?

If I can do both of those, then great. But, my problem is that I don't have the faintest clue what the password is on the system mailbox. Is it blank? Is it some default password? I know that the admin password for the domain doesn't work. Is there any problems with changing it?

MS made it alot more difficult to log onto the Exchange 2000 system account. It was easy to do in 5.5. The reasoning behind it was to stop nosey admins from poking around easily.
That said, it is sometimes necessary to access the System account. This article will fill you in.

I would not recommend using Outlook to access the system mailbox. It is too invasive, the article provides alternatives.

Stalin, I've got that article sitting in front of me. When I try to sign into the system mailbox using the mdbvu32 utility I get an error message.

That was why I was curious about using a mail reader app.

The reason I'm trying to do this is because I botched a user name and I believe they are mail bagged in that account.

Saltin!, lol, what sort of a guy would go around with Stalin as a handle, lol.

Anyhow, you can certainly try to use Outlook to view the mailbox, Ive never done it myself. What error are you getting with mdbvu32?

Saltin, Stalin, it's close enough! :Q 😀

Sorry about that! I'm border line dsylexic.

About mdbvu32, I'm not getting an error message anymore when trying to sign into the system mailbox. I can get in just fine. I just have the problem now of when I go into the IMP subtree, and then choose inbox, nothing shows up under the folder contents window. When I look at the system mailbox properties under the exchange management console, it shows there should be close to 1200 items there.

Any clues how to view those contents? When I try to sign in with outlook, outlook keeps prompting for a password. I went ahead and changed the system mailbox password and it's still a no go. Doesn't appear that my password changes worked.

😕

If your system generates NDR's, and it cannot forward the mail to a valid person, it will forward the mail to the account that installed Exchange 2000. You can change this. The System Account is not for undeliverabel mail, but rather for system processes, ie routing updates, mailbox updates, etc. You wouldn't need to view that mailbox for any reason what so ever.

Within System Manager for Exchange, edit the properties of your SMTP Virtual Server, click on Messages and change the field for "SEND COPY OF NON-DELIVERY REPORT TO:". The message will get bounced back to the sender, and the copy of the NDR will be sent to this account. The original message might not be in the NDR, but you will be able to see who sent the message and to email address they sent it to.
