System Locking Up

What areas can cause system lockup during normal use? I know the memory can cause problems but what about the CPU itself, the chipset, and/or the video card? Screen will freeze and have to reset system.
This occurs while surfing the web as well as when gaming. Everything is set to stock settings.
System setup:
MSI K7N2 Delta-L
Barton 2500+
Kingston KVR 512Mb
MSI GF4 Ti4200
Maxtor 80Gb 7200
 
Anything can cause the problems you are experiencing, from the cpu to bad software. First thing to check is temps, is it running to hot? If not, you might want to remove all unnecessary extra components (usb devices, extra sticks or ram, etc). If it still fails reseat everything, check the cpu heatsink and fan and try again. Then you might either consider formatting, or swapping some parts. Most people would blame the power supply at that point as the most likely culprit.
