My system locks up in what seems to be random events, i can either be reading forums, listening to music or playing a game, but everytime it locks up, the sound coming from the speakers turns to a shhhhhhhhhhhh sound with a touch of a high pitch noise to it...iv'e taken out my sound card and was using the built in audio when it did it again, so my sound card is good.... would it be possible for a video card to make this happen? iv'e replaced my video card with my real old radeon 32MB....there goes playing any games :( and so far its been fine for a day, im going to leave it in for a week to see if it happends with the old card... ive reinstalled countless times because when it locks like this, it usually takes my XP profile with it or last time, it trashed my whole d drive, where my apps, and music is stored, when i clicked on it, it asked me if i wanted to format it....luckily, i found a prog to recover it all... i need to figure out whats going on before it deletes everything and im NOT able to recover it... or it could even be heat related, but the side panel of my case is off, and most of the time there is a cool draft floor level. maybe there is too much dust on my components? idk...

The garbled sound is probably just your sound card looping the sound it was last sent to play. Your problem probably isn't the sound card (but don't hold me to this), rather something else. Look at your CPU temps, if your overclocking, don't. Swap in some new memory (if you can.) If this doesnt fix it, try swapping out components (video, NIC, sound etc) until you find the problem.

oh yea, didnt think of the sound looping, but it also does it even if i wasnt listening to anything. when i first booted, i went into the bios and my MB temp was 86 degrees and my cpu temp was 118 degrees...its prob hotter when im actually using it like right now, is there a prog that will tell me what my temps are in real time?
