system.ini - what do you have under vcache?

I have this
[vcache]
Chunksize=1024
MinFileCache=16384
MaxFileCache=16384

under virtual memory I have: 256min /256max

I have an IBM GXP75, 128 Megs of CAS 2 Infineon P3 700, ATI ALL IN WOnder Pro 32 Meg Card

Since you have 128 megs of ram i suggest you change you settings to...

MinFileCache=32768
MaxFileCache=32768

Your Vcache should be 1/4 of your physical RAM and the min/max should be the same.

If you have 256MB or greater...then, set your virtual memory to the ratio of 1:1 which yours should be 256MB/256MB (min/max). If you have less than 256MB...then, multiply your RAM by 1.5.

Get the freeware called Rampage Here. Install it with the option that shows the amount of the available real Ram in the Tray. This way you can see how the memory behaves while you using the computer.

With P-III @ 1GB, and 196MB Ram I found this setting to be the best on
my working configuration.
Chunksize=512
MinFileCache=0
MaxFileCache=16000

The MaxFileCache setting tells Win98 how much memory to allocate to each open program.

I start my computer with large amount of programs minimized in the Tray. When I allocate more then 16000 the amount of working free memory is so small that Win98 constantly swiping thus losing speed. With 16000 I have 90MB of free mem after every thing (including IE55) is loaded, and the computer works very smooth.

The vcache is the disk cache, not how much memory is allocated to programs. Therefore the more you assign to be available for disk cache, the more memory will be used up for caching and not for use by programs.

I've got mine set to 32MB min, 64MB max. I should probably up that quite a bit, considering the amount of memory I've got. 640MB.

Why exactly do you have the chunk size set to 1k?

There aren't a lot of discussions about any of these settings and what is optimal. Mainly because it's so highly affected by how much memory your system has, what type of hardware you've got, what applications you're running, etc. The only way to really come up with the best settings is to run it on YOUR system at various settings, and benchmark each setting with the programs YOU use the most. However that sucks up a lot of time, since you have to reboot between each settings change, and rerun the programs every time, and you've got 3 different settings to modify.
