My post from a few lines down will explain how I ogt into this situation. Currently my sytem will not reboot into windows and just says that the system.ini file cannot be found, and then shuts down.

I have isnerted the boot disk, but Windows will not start in safe mode
I tried restoring the registry from a dos prompt, but it just says bad command. What can I do to replace the missing sytem.ini file?
Somebody please help, I am totally clueless at this point!

If you can boot to DOS with the bootdisk, do this. Switch to c: drive (you'll be at the a: prompt when the disk is finished booting)

c: <enter>
cd windows <enter>
dir system* <enter>

Now, see if you have anything show up in the directory listing (output of the "dir" command) like
system.bak or system.--- or any other filename that starts with system EXCEPT "system.dat" or "system.1st"...those are registry files and we don't want to do anything with that one. The files we want are probably 10KB in size or less...whereas system.dat and system.1st are much, much larger...a few hundred kb.

If you find a "system.bak" or "system.syd" or "system.---", rename one of them to system.ini and try again to boot up. system.--- is a copy of system.ini from when you first installed Windows, so you might lose some configuration of programs, but the worst is that you 'd have to reinstall them.

Anytime you edit system.ini or win.ini, you should used the "sysedit.exe" program...it automatically makes a backup of the file named *.syd, like system.syd for example.
