System Hangs during IDE detection!

Building a brand new system for my bro for his birthday. Everything hardware-wise is installed. When booting, it hangs for awhile but eventually detects my WD800JB on IDE1 master, and my Lite On 52/32/52 CD-RW drive on IDE2 master. The jumpers on both drives is set to master. Also, the CD-ROM drive will not stay closed when I push the button. It constantly pops open. I have tried connecting the drive to alternate power connectors, to no avail.

Here are some system specs:
Barton 2500+
Biostar M7NCG400
Antec SLK3700 Case with 350W powersupply
2 sticks of Kingmax PC2700 RAM

I can get the system into the BIOS (after waiting for IDE detection for a minute or so). Everything appears fine, and I set the FSB to 166.

Please HELP!

In my experience, if the tray won't stay closed, the drive needs replaced. Hope it's under warranty or even new enough you can just exchange it. Try another drive if you have one handy to test the theory.

Well I got the drive working, I set it to cable select and reconnected all the settings. However the system still hangs during IDE detection... Any advice? Perhaps a BIOS setting that is misconfigured?

Western Digital hard drives have two settings for Master. One is stand-alone (no slave drive) the other is Master w/ Slave drive. Probably best to set it to Cable Select as well and connect it to the end connector (black) on an 80-wire cable. Another thing that can cause a delay during boot is having an active NIC (network interface card) that isn't connected to any network - but this delay is usually during the Win part of the bootup.

Thank you very much! I tried doing that late last night, and it seemed to work, but I didn't understand why. Now it makes sense. I ended up putting both drives in cable select mode.

Thanks again!
