System hangs at desktop (no icons) *Fixed*

Am having a problem with one of my systems here at the house, and hoping maybe someone has had this problem before or knows how to fix it without me having to reinstall windows.

This is sort of a community PC that i let my Young nephews play some games, and browse the Net with.
but the other day it booted up into windows and just stalled at the desktop.
i can see the background but no icons.i can also move the mouse around.

when i hit ctrl+alt+del,it only showed one thing in the box (setserve),or something like that.
didn't have nothing else listed.

i went into the startup config (msconfig),and disabled the (setserve) command that was listed at startup.
but does same thing on startup.
also tried disabling the win.ini/system.ini/config.sys/autoexec.bat one at a time thinking maybe it was something in the command lines messing things up since it starts in safemode fine.

if anyone may no what the problem is, i'd appreciate any help with this.
don't really feel like reinstalling everything right now if i can avoid it..heh.

system has ran fine for a few months till just the other day.

Specs:

Win98SE
Celeron 566
256Mb Ram
TNT2 32Mb

maybe that is a virus of some kind? in safe mode have you tried running your virus checker? also have you updated all of your virus definitions?

I thought maybe it could be a Virus, but none of the other systems on the LAN have the same problem.
and i never intsalled any Virus software on that system yet.
the other 3 systems on the LAN have checked out ok for any Virus.

I'll try and get a Virus Prog installed in that system somehow and try to scan it.

Any other info would be appreciated incase this isn't the problem.

Ok i found out what the problem was.just wish i found out before windows reinstall.

the problem was the NIC in the system.didn't even think,or feel like taking the thing apart till windows failed to install all the way..heh.
would lock up everytime when searching for PnP Hardware.so then figured the hardware was causing the lockups.
sure enough, after pulling the NIC it worked fine. 🙂

Now just need to tweak it a bit since the Vid is having a problem installing with the junk Onboard Vid. (keeps detecting both Vid cards)
