System halts when installing SB Live! .. need help

I recently built a new computer with an Asus a7s333 motherboard and athlon 2100+ xp. My latest issue is the sound card. The motherboard has onboard sound, but I disabled it. Every time I try to install my soundblaster live card, it halts at the "SBLive! emulation" driver install. My mouse light (optical) dies and the video card seems to shut off. I've tried switching slots and different IRQs, but I can't seem to pinpoint the problem. Any info/suggestions appreciated. OS is windows ME (latest drivers).
 
Windows ME does not support Legacy drivers (emulation drivers)

Can you boot to SAFE MODE?
If so, go to Device Manager and disable the emulation (i.e. "disable device in this Profile")
 
Please please please do not use Windows ME. It's microsofts biggest pos software and they know it. Use XP or 2k.
