System halts until printing is complete

I constantly run into this problem on a windows 98 box while printing. Whenever I
send a job for printing the system literally hangs (means I am not
able to do anything else until the printing is finished).
For your information the current spool settings 'Start prining After
the first page is spooled .... and the Spool data format is "EMF".
I have tried changing the spool settings with raw, also reinstalled
the print drivers but to no avail..... any ideas how to fix this
problem ?
 
What are the system specs? What kind of printer? Connection (parallel, USB)? Any more information you can provide us with?
