would this system be good enough for gaming now and the future ( i want to play doom, 3 unreal tourney the one that is coming out, and gta3, plus all the other games out there.)

athlon xp 1800
epox 8kha+
512 mb pc 2100 crucial
1 seagate or maxtor 60 gig HD
visiontek/asus geforce 4 ti 4200 128 mb(which one should i get Asus or the visiontek one)
lite on 32x cdrw
asus 16x dvdrom

about what fps would i get in gta3 and generally any game.

I have somewhat similar specs and my machine runs every game perfectly at 1024x768. I can't use 1280x1024 so I can't quote you there. The 4200 is a great card, the Ti4400 / Ti4600 and Radeon 9700 might be a bit more suited to Doom3 from what the developers are saying. UT2k3 shoul drun just fine.

With the Radeon 9700 coming out in a few weeks, and the 9500 a few weeks after that, this is a relatively poor time to upgrade your video card. If you could possibly keep your old card about a month longer, you should be able to get a better card for the same money.

It's a good system but i think that your Ti4200 may start to struggle above 1024 x 768 in UT2, Doom3 and other future games.

Consider a Radeon 9700 as a future upgrade (or an NV30 if you prefer to wait).

I think the 4200 may be marginal for some of the games you are interested in. I'm sure it would be adequate, but you might find yourself selecting less than full effects in the games to get them really smooth.

Today I'd recommend a 4400 (ASUS and Visiontek are both good). I'm not ready to hop on the ATI bandwagon just yet but that is only because I am more interested in real life operation than the hype, hopes and promises that ATI is famous for. ("It may not work too good yet, but just wait till we fix the drivers, then it will" etc.... )

IMO, the ATI card is gonna be a winner, but I've seen too many people disappointed (sometimes even shocked) when they compare what an ATI card does to what was promised and hyped.

i agree, thats why i refused to believe in the hype. but when i saw real performance numbers - thats what shocked me. this card will be a winner.

unreal tourney the one that is coming out

If you're in the mood for waiting you can hope the demo comes out sometime this year so you can see how your system will handle it. I'm hoping it will handle it nicely, since I have basically the same system except with a ti4400 instead.

dude thats plenty.

they're aiming games at a mass market; they're not gonna make a game so intense that the consumer MUST have the absolute newest video card to be able to adequately handle it. think about it. a ti4200 is plenty juicey.

Uhm are you kidding me? Yeah, you can game with that system.

If you're big on OC'ing, you could possibly get a 4400 and then OC to 4600+ speeds. People seem to forget what a good card the Ti 4600 is, with all the new Radeon 9700 benchies out...
