System frozen before I can get to BIOS

Hi everyone. this is kinda lengthy but I bolded the key points 🙂

I am having trouble with my new rig...
I just built this machine 5 days ago. It's been working flawlessly
up until yesterday when I started burning a DVD.

(note: all of this started yesterday with me trying to merge the 2 partitions on my old hard drive and getting an error... the partition was lost but i downloaded GetDataBack and was
able to recover the files.)

System Specs:
A8N-SLI Premium
Athlon64 4000+
2GB OCZ Enhanced Latency DDR400 (4x512)
XFX GeForce 7800GT
37GB SATA Raptor (primary drive)
160GB EIDE Barracudda (HD from old box, now storage)
Sony DVDRW

i was burning a dvd (archiving some of the files i recovered from the
160GB drive) and it stopped responding after 40%. the read buffer went
from 100% to zero, but the timer kept counting down.

i killed Nero and then tried to restart because i couldn't eject the disc. it took forever to shut down, and was stuck on the "Logging off" screen, so i powered down the machine.

upon booting back up, the speaker beeps once, and it makes it to the
screen that has the ASUS Logo and says "Press Del to enter Setup",
then freezes right there.

I can't even get into the BIOS. the keyboard doesn't respond after 1
or 2 keypresses (tested by pressing numlock repeatedly and watching
the light go on and off, then stop responding)

i took out all the RAM and tried 1 stick at a time. Reset the CMOS
by taking out the battery and switching jumpers. Unplugged the
IDE HD and the DVDRW. all the same result.

Any similar experiences? Is my BIOS dead already?

I'm open to further suggestions...

thanks for reading...

RMA the mobo?

Sounds kinda odd that it worked flawlessly for 5 days though... See what other members have to say-

Sorry I wasn't very much help-

yeah that's going to be the last resort... hopefully something else will come up so i can play some BF2!

is it a safe assumption that if i unplug everything except the RAM, video card and CPU and try to power it on and the same thing happens then it's the mobo/BIOS?

What PS are you using?

It's possibly HD corruption, try and boot up to the windows CD and do a repair install.

Since the problem occured while burning it could be a driver or firmware issue with your optical drive. If the repair install works update the driver and firmware on your optical drive.

It's an Enermax 535W PSU...

i will try to boot from CD tonight... however it hasn't even made it that far yet. after the BIOS screen it has to initialize the RAID on the mobo (which i'm not using) and then it starts the boot sequence.

i'm back in business...

had to unplug my USB hub, then it booted right up.

not sure if that was the initial cause, but I guess after the BIOS reset, it was trying to boot off my external HD first. kinda weird that it didn't even get past the BIOS, i would've thought it would say something like NTLDR missing or something.

thanks everyone who responded... much more response here than asus forums (0 replies).
