system from hell --- heat problem?

I'm trying to get this low-end system running...

slot celeron 366
128MB PC100
ABIT WB6 microATX w/ integrated video/sound
Quantum Bigfoot 19.2GB
generic 8X IDE cdrom

Tried to install win98 and win2k, replaced the hard disk, tried again.. thought the motherboard might be messed up.. spent $54 on the Abit WB6 which replaced the Acer board. Tried Win2k, tried 98... I give up.

I ruled out the problem of heat because the BIOS reports a temperature of ~ 100F. Could it be lying? The problems which plagued me are similar to those caused by heat: file errors, program crashes.

Any ideas?

Try a diff IDE cable? new PSU? New RAM? New CPU?

It could be ANY of those. Find someone with a similiar computer and swap parts till it works. Its the best way without having fancy tools. Will take some work which most people don't like and bitch about. But computers take more work than other toys I guess, that is just the way it is.

can't believe i didn't try a diff cable...

DO you think I will have to format and reinstall the OS before I try the changes? I ask this because it might have installed incorrectly.

What OS? Of course try a fresh install and get all the right 4in1's and stuff first. Make sure all that is right, THEN start checking the |H|ardWare
