System freeze after boot-up - laptop

I have an Dell laptop ( 4 yrs old). When I boot up, applications are loaded fine(in systray). While this is happening I am able to move the mouse. At some point the system freezes and I have no control over anything ( mouse, function keys, etc). It happens towards the end of loading all of the start-up applications. I have started the PC in safe mode, removed and re-installed the mouse driver. It operates ok in safe. Rebooting in normal results in same result. I don't have a diagnostic disk. Is there another driver that I should reinstall or other steps to try?

Are you using USB mouse? Why not try to boot without a mouse first and see if it still freeze. You still have the touchpad. If it does, then it is not a mouse issue. Otherwise it might just be a driver issue.

Go into safe mode and launch msconfig and disable all non MS services and all startup items. Then reboot into normal windows. If that works, you can just use process of elimination to figure out what is causing this problem. More than likely a stratup item is hanging your system.

I have a USB mouse, but I stopped using it and removed it as the problem. The touchpad doesn't work as well. both mouse and touch pad work until all of the applications load. could it be a service or another device?

After process of elimination it turned out to be the Wireless G network adapter w/ speed booster exe. Thanks for your help
