system files breaking! help!

Hi, I just got a new harddrive (maxtor 80gigger) and I have been desperately trying (in vain) to install win2k on it. I have had this exact same version/copy running fine on my western digital drive for years.

Here what breaks. It will install, everythings fine for about 2-5 days, when all of the sudden the files winnt\system32\software and winnt\system32\system (either or, evetually both) become "missing or corrupted". I can replace them with the backups in winnt\repair\ easily enough, but then i lose all my system info and they break again anyway.

I cant believe this is a problem with my new 80gig harddrive, cuz why would just these files die? So i thought virus, but norton finds nothing, with the latest virus updates.

This is on an Abit BE6-II with the hpt366 controller. I got the latest BIOS and drivers for it. Still same prob.

Is this some freak problem with the new maxtor and this harddrive controller?

thanks for any help.

You don't say what OS you're running. That would help.

Try disabling write caching on the drive for a few days and see if you can get the problem to happen.
