System doesn't always boot up

I've just been building a system for the first time using an Epox 8KHA+, an Athlon XP 1700+, 512mb PC2100 DDR, and a Gainward GF3 Ti200.

The problem is, I think that my part of my mobo is coming into contact with my case and thus is keeping my system from posting or booting. The only thing that happens when I push the power button is that the fans will spin and the status light comes on for about a second. Then everything shuts off.

Sometimes I would have to kinda pull a little at the PCI slots or other parts to try to get it away from the case a little so that it would boot. It doesn't always work immediately but it works most of the time. If any of you have the 8KHA+, there are a couple of black transistors (or whatever you call it) at the back of the mobo. I'm guessing those are whats causing my problems.

Any ideas on how I can made raise the board a little? I'm using all the necessary screws and risers that came with the case. It's a plain generic case btw. This is a big problem because I don't want to have to shift and play with the mobo everytime I want to turn on the computer.

thanks in advance

Set it up outside the case. If the case was the problem, it should boot up perfectly every time. If you've got the same problem, follow these steps:

1. Try a new PSU
2. Reseat RAM, VID Card, Processor
3. Try a new mobo?

To accent Sp3ence:

1.) What power supply are you using? You need an AMD approved power suppy or at least a 350W.

2.) What kind of case? Sounds like a pile of crap :), if you have enough money to buy a GF3, then put more money into the case. Get an Antec case or something.

3.) What BIOS version do you have?

Good luck!

I had the impression that a 300w PSU would be enough. The whole case is a generic piece of crap but thats what I get for $50.

I've tried an ECS K7S5A with the same parts and the same thing happens. It's either the case or the PSU. Damn

Power supply problem...

With the combination of the Geforce3 and the high end Athlon you need at least 350watts...both of those items are power hogs.

*nods*

Try a new power supply - and MAKE SURE that it's AMD approved this time :)

Damn. A new PSU costs a lot of money.

Stupid thing works fine if I leave the PSU on all the time but once I turn it off to change a few components or something, that damn problem starts again.

Oh well. What kind of PSU should I get? Enermax 350w?
