Can any one suggest a decent handheld diagnostic tool? I'm looking to go used car shopping and would to be prepared. Also, what does it cost, and will I need any additional hardware?

The best diagnostic tool you can have for throughly checking out a used car before you buy is a good mechanic.

This^.

I code reader isn't going to tell you anything. If the check engine light is on it will tell why, beyond that it's of no value to you.

Yea what are you trying to do with the scanner?

If all you want is a way to pull the codes and get basic information then get a Bluetooth adapter and download Torque.

But to see what a car needs and its condition then a good tech is what you want.
