System dead?

When my friend turned on his computer today he said he smelled something burning, saw smoke rise from the back of the computer and then the system turned off. I stopped by his office assuming right away that the power supply was the problem. I unhooked the PSU from the computer (including any molex connectors going to components) and plugged it into a power supply testor. It would turn on but the PSU housing was very warm to the touch (even before testing it). I cracked open the PSU housing and I could clearly smell/see that a few resisitors had burned up. My friend also said that after this happened he turned the system back on again a few times but all it would do is shut itself down. (That probably wasn't the brightest of ideas 🙂 ) After buying a new power supply and hooking it up the system will not turn on. I verified that the PSU was working properly at the computer shop I purchased it from and the LED on the motherboard lights up when the 20pin PSU cable is connected verifying that it's getting juice. I inspected the motherboard (both back and front), cpu and ram and there were no visible burn marks. Is it safe to say that this board is dead or should more testing be done to verify this? Any suggestions would help. Thanks.
