System crashes when watching DivX/asf...

I posted this problem in the Video forum but I got no response. The problem still exists and I'm considering formatting and reinstalling. Can anyone suggest someway to fix this problem?

I've been recently having this problem when watching lengthy divx/asf. For example, a few minutes ago I was watching an episode of Stargat SG-1 in asf format using Windows Media Player. After about 14 minutes into the episode, the video and audio begin to lose sync. When I try to stop the asf, I find my system to be completely inaccessible. Pressing alt+ctrl+del, brings up the blue screen of death (which I haven't seen since Win98). I thought, maybe it was because I was watching the asf in full screen mode. So I rebooted my comp and started the asf from where I left off. This time maximized. After 29 minutes into the episode, my comp crashed again. I can't even get the task box to come up so that I can kill the vid. Only a blue screen of death from which I have no choice but to reboot.

I thought I had solved this problem about a week ago when I reinstalled the DivX 3.11alpha drivers after I tried to watch a divx of Who's Line Is It Anyway?. The same problem occurred then as well but after I rebooted and reinstalled the drivers, I was able to finish the episode without a problem. I was also able to see other asf's the other day without any problems. Now all of a sudden this problem is happening again.

Is there something else I can do? Can anyone figure why this is happening? I have the latest drivers for my graphics card installed and I'm using Win Media Player 6.4.07.1112, since I can't stand 7.0. I really don't know what else to do...

I wonder if your CPU, power supply or your video card is not overheating. The fact that it happens apparently randomly leads me to this. My suggestion is to take off the cover of the case and put a house fan on the system and see if it still happens.

It sounds like overheating, but there is a nice cooler with your CPU, and the videocard is able off playing long clips.

I brought up the whole overheating thing in another forum, here. Could that be why my comp crashes. I mean, it doesn't crash when I do anything else... And the cover to comp is off because of the high temps. And I'm not overclocking.

Okay, I watched Asus Probe's measurements while watching an asf of Stargate. These are the measurements right when my comp crashed:

CPU Temp = 50C
MB Temp = 31C
+12V = 12.099
-12V = -11.57
+5V = 4.945
-5V = -4.96
+3.3V = 3.44
VCore = 1.728

After I rebooted:

CPU Temp = 51C
MB Temp = 32C
+12V = 12.099
-12V = -11.507
+5V = 4.945
-5V = -4.984
+3.3V = 3.44
VCore = 1.728

Does this at all explain my problem? I really would like to fix this. What should I do?

Well, it was just a guess. I'm sorry... nothing else comes to mind. It sounds like it must be a very subtle codec/driver conflict (subtle since this is the only app you see it in).

Well I guess that means I'll have to reinstall WinME. Oh well...

Anyone else care to add their two cents?
