I've been playing for almost a week now with my ASUS mobo and copy of the game. No issues to report.

So basically the only way I could play this stupid game is if I get a new mobo and/or soundcard? Great.

I'm STILL having problems. I've tried everything; I'm wondering if Punk Buster isn't to blame for the critical system error though. I say this because everything worked fine until apparently PunkBuster "auto-updated". I'm to the point where I just don't care about playing anymore.

Muerta,

I totally feel your pain. But I am convinced the problem lies with your game account somehow. I have spoken with some computer insiders on this matter and they say that seemingly, my fix defies logic.

For anyone reading this for the first time, I literally swapped out every single piece of hardware on my system (processor, mobo, vid card, sound card, network adapter, ram, tried 2 different hard drives). I ran all 3 versions of the game, reinstalled windows, fdisked windows, etc. The problem is not likely hardware. The only reason I recommend the SiS chipset is because I witnessed the game running well on a system with it. So I migrated over to the board (it was only $66). I've also heard this several times 'it worked on my old system'. Perhaps there is a conflict with newer technology. To me, however, the key fix was exchanging my copy of the game. I read somewhere (and I've mentioned this previously) that the issue is a cookie. Having tested all my hardware, I have to agree that it is software. I exchange the copy of the game, started a new account, and have had no issues moving forward.

Before you throw in the towel, if possible, try getting a new copy and if you are up to it, reinstall a clean version of windows one more time. After playing the game this week, I have to admit, it is pretty bad-ass. As much disdain as I have for EA right now (and am learning they are not alone in poor support of their product) they made a hell of a game when it runs.

Knowing what I went through to get it to work, I hope everyone who has problems can find a fix and enjoy the game. It's simply the best FPS out right now (minus these ridiculous problems, of course).

Well, the reason I supsect Punkbuster is that the problem has now manifested itself in all of the multiplay games that utilize it (namely bf1942 and BF2). I've tried manually updating it as well, but to no avail. I haven't a clue as to what is triggering this problem and it only seems to be getting worse. :(. I've started a new post here to see if anyone else has been having a problem similar to mine so this doesn't get "overpopulated" as it seems most people on here encountered a problem with the creative card/drivers themselves.

silence89: Mouse fix is easy... go into controls before joining a game and click "use default" (or something like that). all of your keys got unbinded somehow... happened to me.

UPDATE: My game still freezes, even with the new X-Fi soundcard, but it's a different "sounding" freeze now. I talked to a buddy last night and he was having issues just like mine accross all of his games. The only commonality between our two systems was a Creative soundcard and an AMD chip.

Well I've noticed that whenever I turn graphics settings to High my game crashes in about 10 seconds. When they are turned to low I might be able to play a full round before crashing. I have a 6800 unlocked, maybe I should try an ATi or some other card.

Just out of curiousity have any of you guys tried using the WinXP 64 bit beta version w/64 bit drivers? I decided to use that and all of my problems have disappeared. I don't know what the deal was, but this worked like a charm.

Muerta, I'm glad you found a fix. Sounds like it's some sort of conflict between Windows and the game.

wow... do I really feel like installing Win64... no! But does that take anything away from your find? Nope! :)

I'm having this same problem and I contacted AMD Support with it and they asked me what my PSU was. It has 11A on the +12v rail, which isn't enough. I have bought a new Power Supply recommended by the AMD Support Person and will see if that works.

My problem is similar. I go into the game and less than 5 seconds into the game, it would freeze. Everything is jammed and I have to restart.

HOWEVER, for me it also freezes when I'm using diagnostic or benchmarking toold such as Everest, 3DMark03 and 05, and CPUz.

As for the rest of you guys, all you can do is try different drivers, reinstall Windows, or get a new power supply. If the video card is defective it may be a culprit also. Somehow you need to isolate the problem. If one other DirectX and one OpenGL game is fine on your video card, then it's probably not the problem either. If it's fine in Windows x64, then it's not your power supply. etc, etc.

It freezes on BF2 and Sims 2 for me. BUT, it also freezes when Everest: Home is starting and always freezes when its scanning PCI devices. It also freezes for me when I try to launch 3DMark03 and 05. Also freezes when I try to launch CPUz and SpeedFan.

I just got a new Forton PSU, freezing is still there.

The BSOD bug check code you posted was "Bug Check 0x8E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED" which usually indicates a faulty device driver.

There is no way user mode code can cause a crash like that, unless it tickles a bug in a device driver in some way (not too uncommon). All your switching around could've bypassed the problem somehow.

I'm a bit puzzled by the following though:
*** Stop:0x0000008e (0xc0000005, 0xb283001a, 0xb26ae5e8, 0x00000000)
*** vm67kr9p - address b283001a base at b282e000, datestamp 42e15f8b
Is "vrn67kr9p" the name of a device driver? It looks out of place... Could you run "driverquery" and study its output? My guess is that "vrn67kr9p" is not listed, but if it is, it would be interesting to learn what its description says... ("kr9p" almost looks like l33t for "crap")

Are you sure you have the same stuff installed with your working system? Same firewall and AV software? (the two biggest sources of crappy device drivers :()

Does "everything" include CTRL+ALT+DELETE? Does NumLock work?

Freezes are the worst, since with a BSOD you atleast get some decent crash information and sometimes the responsible device driver will be fingered.

Same kind of freeze?

My guess: not videorelated then. And you have another PSU, so it is probably OK. Have you used memtest86 much lately? Latest chipset drivers?

Yes, Everything, including CTRL+ALT+DELETE and NumLock are frozen.

And with CPUz and SpeedFan, yes, same type of freeze. I've run Memtest86+ many times, and memory is working perfectly.

As for the chipset drivers, the installation freezes during installation.

It might be worth mentioning that freezes also occur during other installations.

Hey Bike Dude,

I'm not sure if you read the entire thread, but I went through alot to get the game working. Device drivers were the first line of fixes for me. That got me nowhere and I ended up swapping every single piece of hardware in my system including the Mobo and the Processor.

I do not think it's hardware or driver related. I had no AV software running but Adaware was installed. However, it was installed and running the entire month the game worked properly. Seemingly, the trouble came out of nowhere. Just one day, it started acting exactly like Battlefield: Vietnam. Rebooting my entire machine 5-10 seconds after a multi-player game launched. Every other application (except America's Army) worked properly on my system.

Hey xFlankerx

I tried different hard drive's, different cd rom's, different dvd drives, different ram, different motherboard, different power supply (a nice Antec 500w w/ swappable sockets), different video card, different sound card, different processor, different windows, different drivers, etc. Nothing worked til I got an Asus Mobo (P4S800D-X), a new copy of the game, and started running my purchased copy with Daemon Tools. I started a new account and have been playing without issue for 3 weeks.

I have no idea what or why or if it will help you. All I know is it works and I love playing the game.

Good Luck,

I do not doubt that for a second, however updating drivers won't do much unless the driver vendor has actually fixed the issue you're contending with...

"vm67kr9p" is probably the name of the offending driver -- the one that crashed your system. (they switch the position of the driver name around, I thought it was supposed to be on the first line, so maybe I'm wrong, but...)

As I said, there's no way BF2 can cause a BSOD, unless it installs some device driver (maybe PunkBuster does just that...?). Either case, the guy who wrote the faulty device driver needs to be told. At the very least you should've submitted a crash dump to http://oca.microsoft.com/.

Just a really wild guess, but perhaps it's Daemon Tools which uses random crazy device driver names. I can't find that driver on google anywhere except this very thread. What CD/DVD related programs do you have on your PC? Easy CD Creator, Nero, Alcohol 120, Daemon Tools, etc?
