System Cooler/Muffler.....it works!

Project of the week....heh. This is a muffler/fan setup that replaces your front case fan, replaces your hard drive cooler, might replace your rear case fan also, uses a 120mm fan, and is completely silent at 12v.

Since front mounted fans are usually noisy, I try to avoid them, if at all possible. Even openings/vents in the front allow noise to escape. This setup is made of 3/4" oak boards, on some carpet castors. The case is turned into a muffler as shown in the pics. Air is sucked out of the case, over the two velcro mounted hard drives, and exits out the back of the wood case through a down-turned tailpipe extension...a real muffler.

I cannot hear the 120mm fan at all, even when running full blast.

The flange in the pics is a plumbing part....I only used the pvc part which is about 92mm. In pict 4 you can see how I constructed the muffler...the air flow is not straight through, similar to a real car muffler. The foam is from Sams, a floor mat contraption for kids. Cuts easily, so I made it a tight fit in the wood case. No other attachment is necessary. The fan just is held in a cutout in one foam piece.

If you used a really powerful 120mm fan, a setup like this might be able to cool everything in your case, if you ducted it properly. It's quiet...Cooler/Muffler

Wow that looks like plenty of work.. If that works well that's cool, does it raise ur temps any? For that much work I'd just assume use a watercooler though 🙂

Well I don't see how this could raise temps any....I was using a front case fan [80mm] for the same purpose. The 120mm fan in this muffler probably can suck 2x the air, so it actually can make everything cooler.

This setup is based on an Aopen board with SilentTek, so I have the ability to control the temps of the system. It is plenty cool, even at maximum load. The primary function of this setup is to lower the noise level of the system...which it has.

The very last thing I will do to a computer is to install any sort of water-cooling. The expence is too great, and the possibility for a disasterous leak is too real.

NOW THAT IS WHAT I CALL A MOD! I couldnt dream of doing something like that. How about making some detailed instructions on how to do it and posting them? 😛😀

Nice work, but I wonder how a "squirrel cage" blower would work? With the wooden box, there would be plenty of room to mount it.

Honestly, that has to be the coolest case mod ever. One million e-props to you Bluefront. Now put a spoiler on that Lanboy and you got yourself a winner.

Really it wasn't hard to make. There's about $22 of wood in the box....2 pieces of stair-riser oak, 48"x7 1/4"x3/4". I got it at Home Depot....have them cut it. Six cuts, six pieces. It's held together with butt-joints and screws and is plenty strong. The lenghts of the long boards are up to you. The pictures show how they were assembled. Mine is a few inches longer than the Lanboy.

Really all the dimensions depend on your particular case, so just measure carefully. I think those pictures are all you should need. I used oak because everything else in this house is oak. If you used pine, you could save a few dollars.

This thing lowered my noise level quite a bit....you'll have to build one to see.
