well i built my system last night after waiting since last thursday for all the parts to come in from newegg and zipzoomfly, (cant say im very impressed with the shipping)

i've built servers before but never a "new age" type of system so i wanted to make sure i did everything right, the only thing i was a bit concerned about was the amount of artic silver 5 i put on the heatsink and the top of the athlon 64 processor, i didnt want to put too much and i didnt want to do too little, if i happened to do that, what is the tell tale sign?

i went into the msi k8n bios after i had everything built and the tornados on like half speed with the fan controller and wa running 25-27C system temp, and 36-38C cpu temp, obviously i know bios isnt actually 100% accurate temp wise, does that sound good or should i potentially take the heatsink off and reapply some more arctic silver

the system specs are

amd 64 3500+ w/msi k8n ultra plat using xp-90 heatink w/ a 92mm tornado
2 gigs of ocz el rev2
6800GT video card and audigy 2 zs
thermaltake shark case with an ocz powerstream 470watt psu
2 raptor 74gb drives and 1 wd 200gb drive

The temps sound great!!
Standard will vary by set up but that really sounds like a good OC setup. Keep em below 50C OC'd and you should be great.

If you use too much AS5 you will see it seep out from under the heatsink like you would with too much elmers glue:)

Chances are you got it right if you dont see any and you covered the center of the die.

i don't think applying more thermal paste would change much for your temps. you don't need much of it for it to do its job effectively. actually, using too much could goop the stuff out from between your heatsink and proc, and then you will have a mess to clean and get goop all over you and everything else.

there are a ton of guides out there, even right here in these forums, which would give you good help and guidelines for installing your hsf combo etc. i lost the link, but there is a good video out there as well, which shows a closeup of a good amount of stuff to use.

having said that, a very small (paper thin) amount of thermal paste is all that is required. just follow the instructions, its not that hard to do. as for your cpu temps, they look fine to me. mine runs about 39C when idle, and at 'load' (ie. playing a 3d game, or stressing the system in some way) it has been up to as high as 45C. Generally speaking I think anything under 50C when at full load is acceptable - thats my humble opinion. but when you get into overclocking and different cooling setups, such as water cooling etc, then you are obviously seeking lower temps etc.
