Bear with me for a second. I am in the process of possibly upgrading my computer now or in about 6 months. Primary reason is that video processing from my HV20 is extremely slow and backing up my DVDs. Until I get a NAS, all current sata drives will remain in the system primarily for storage. I will be upgrading to Windows 7. Eventually, I will go to a core i7 between now and March (really depends on cash flows).

Current system:
C2D E6300
Asus P5W DH Deluxe
Corsair XMS DDR2 2x2GB
HD4850
various SATA HDDs

Plan:
SSD: For Win 7, games, and video processing
Sata HDDs: For storage, DVD backups, and repository of video files after processing

Is this a good plan for now while I work on getting funding for an i7 build?
 
Yes, SATA spindle drives are still great for large file storage where you need a lot of space and are doing primarily sequential reads.

When you do upgrade to an i7, turn your current PC into a Windows Home Server.
 
Thanks for the info. You stated what I thought my plan would be. I will get an SSD when I get Win 7 and use my current rig. Early next year or if prices plummet on parts, I will use my current setup as a WHS and build basically a new system (SSD and keep one of my existing sata for local storage).
