I have an old abit kt7 with duron 800 on 128crucial ram. I built it for my cousins... and i dont know what they did to it while i wasn't looking... but i found out they erased one of the system files trying to make room for their computer... how stupid i know... i already beat him up.

Now usually i'd just put in the win2k disc (current os) and fix it... but it wont boot off dvd-cdrw combo drive.

I tried going into bios... the boot sequence was set for cdrom 1st... i even tried getting rid of hdd, but still no read. THe floppy is dead they tell me ... so its dead too.

I've tried switching to a regular old cd-rom but still no luck. I've tried using different os's to boot... still wont work. I've even tried to switch cables... and also master/slave 2nd master/slave no luck... its funny because when the os was working the cdrom's were reading fine. Just doesn't want to read the boot cd's. BOOOOO.... this sux. I think the cdrom's might be dirty or somethin... maybe i should try cleaning.

When the system starts up it recognizes both cdrom's... and puts out "boot from atapi cdrom:failure..."

please give some wisdom to this noob.

Maybe try using another cable for the CD-ROM (I have had them go bad before).

Try switching the cables at the MOBO for the CD-ROM and HDD to see if the controller on the MOBO went up (This has also happened to me).

Try comparing the system files on your cousins pc with that of another win200 pc, by pluggin their hdd into another pc as a slave and browsing it in windows.

If u discover what is missing, simply copy the file back from the other hdd.
