Fortunately, it seems few or none of the Syrians really knew what a furry convention is all about.

Syrian refugees resettling in Canada and a group of people dressed up as animals created a surreal and heartwarming scene of acceptance after they found themselves at the same hotel.
The recent arrivals are being housed at the Executive Airport Plaza, the Vancouver-area hotel that also just hosted the annual gathering of British Columbia furries, a "fandom" where participants create their own anthropomorphic animal personas.
Chris Jantz, who has been a furry for three years, told the Daily News that he and others at the fifth VancouFur convention were at their hotel Sunday morning when a bus pulled up and dozens of refugees poured into the lobby.
Some may have expected a heavy amount of culture, or subculture, shock from the meeting, though what followed was an aww-inspiring mixture of the two groups.
Jantz, who himself was not dressed up, said that despite the initial wariness of their parents, the children among the refugees were immediately drawn to the gang of oversized kittens, foxes and dogs. About 171 “fursuiters” attended the event.
