Syrian Air Defense shoots down Israeli F16

The Israeli jet was conducting "retaliatory" strikes because of drones entering occupied Golan airspace. One out of 4 F16s were shot down along with several popeye missiles they launched. syrian Air defense launched 20 S200 and Kub (both old soviet designs) missiles in response to F16s launching strikes from Lebanese airspace. Two pilots ejected, one severely injured with the other moderately injured. The aircraft crashed onto Israeli territory on the border with Syria. There are rumors that the more severely injured pilot has died. This is the first time since 1982 that the IAF have had a combat loss.

This is a big deal. I posted the last time Syria defended its air space and supposedly damaged an Israeli jet. It looks like they have finally had success in defending their territory. Great news for Syria and the resistance axis. Now Israel can no longer conduct strikes from Lebanese airspace without possibly losing million dollar aircraft and even pilots. Israel has been able to act with impunity for 30 years, now that will change. Israel will have to be content with launching cruise missile or drone strikes which will severely limit their combat capabilities over Syria.

It is interesting to note that this jet was shot down using syrian air defense systems (Not Russian) and did not use the modern S300V or S400 missiles that the RuAF have emplaced in Latakia. That means that Syria still has a lot up its sleeve in terms of air defense capabilities. It also means the Russians did not approve this shoot down. Israel should take note that Syria may be able to track and shoot down even more advanced aircraft should the Russians decide to approve of them doing so.

If you can shoot down jets, then when Israel needs to respond to attacks, they'll weigh ground invasions as more successful.

This is probably exactly what Hezbollah and Assad want - Israeli air force is world class but their ground troops are utter garbage because they are simply taken from the general populace and they have zero experience. Israel got its ass kicked in Lebanon fighting with 20,000 ground troops against some 2000 Hezbollah. See below:

Israel knows they'd just get their ass kicked again if they invaded Syria. They can't tolerate casualties.

That's why Israel knows that keeping up the perception that they are "unbeatable" is so important, and that's why this shoot down is a HUGE blow to Israel.

You do understand, comrade, that ALL armies are recruited from.....wait for it....their general populations. Imagine that! And they're all "garbage" until they're trained and gain experience. Imagine that, too! Training overcomes lack of experience.

Not when you're Russian. Vodka overcomes everything.

This is a deliberate excuse for ground invasion. Sacrifice a plane, expand territory.

lmao. so all countries have mandatory military service for all their citizens?

Or i guess you didn't know that about Israel? makes you wonder why you even joined this conversation. Often wrong, never in doubt... you probably think Isreali ground troops are the best in middle east, right? Because they are 'murican allies?

Are you dumb enough to think otherwise in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary? (Unless you are counting troops from other countries not in the Middle East temporarily employed there.)

Isreali ground troops have repeatedly fought their neighbors and very decisively won (or at least had extremely favorably casualty ratios etc) in various conflicts, with the only arguable partial exception to this with more conventional conflicts being in 1948-49 (although still a favorably casualty ratio among other accomplishments) when in major respects their opponents had equipment advantages along with already existing armies. The only cases where this has not been so much the case are instances in which the opposing forces were insurgents who were blending in with the civilian population which provides potentially effective advantages to those engaging in such fighting. Even in those cases its more a case of Israel potentially failing to achieve strategic goals rather than anything remotely like them their military failing to be at all effective in engagements.

Edit: The Wikipedia entry clearly does not support your claim regarding the 2006 Lebanon War.

So Israeli's flying American planes flew over Lebanese territory chased Iranians drones flying over disputed territory taken from Syria by Israel into Syria and then Syrian operated Russian missiles shot them down therefore Israel is going to blame Iran.

Summary - Lebanese banner makers are on 4chan

For even more hillarity
The Iranian drone flying over the Golan Heights is based off the American drone that was captured flying over the Iranian city of Kashmar.

Where in the fuck did you get that first sentence out of what I wrote? Nowhere did I speak to compulsory service, which Israel has, as I was well aware of and you needlessly pointed out? You were making a point that Israel's army was crap because they used the local population to assemble their army, which I proceeded to call your opinion pure horse shit because all armies of all countries are assembled from their native populations. And then you come up with compulsory service as a retort.....which never was the point in the first place.

Interestingly, as an aside, I was privileged to view/witness some of the live feeds the U.S. received from various sources during the 1973 Yom Kipper War. Despite a two-pronged surprise attack on two fronts, the Israelis certainly held their own...if not kicked some serious Egyptian and Syrian behind.

But, given your posting history, comrade Fivr, your opinions are worth about as much as a used tampon.

Cheers!

It's not exactly reasonable that Israel should retaliate for unarmed surveillance drones with airstrikes. I'm sure they have drones of their own operating in Syria. It's only reasonable that the Syrians should defend themselves.

Um, It's amazing you think that's Israel getting its ass kicked. By any measure or metric.

The conflict is believed to have killed between 1,191 and 1,300 Lebanese people, and 165 Israelis.

The goal of the Israel Air Force was to coerce Lebanon into pulling Hezbollah back from the Israeli border. This was done by targeting Lebanese infrastructure, NOT Hezbollah forces. It worked.

The part of Hezbollah the IAF did target was their larger, longer-ranged and more threatening rockets. They succeeded quite well - almost none of them made it off the ground.

Has Israel enjoyed complete peace on its northern border? No, but for the last 12 years they’ve had relative peace while Hezbollah has concentrated more on governance and politics than warfare. I’d say that’s a win.

So what? Unarmed surveillance drones are insufficient cause for airstrikes. Shooting down an Israeli attacker is a strong rallying point for Assad's forces, as well.

Who would win?

An invading force for 5,000 IDF soldiers, regarded as the premier military force in the Middle East

or

150 Local Hezbollah Militants

Don't get upset that you didn't know about Israeli compulsory military service you troglodyte. Whipe that spittle off your foaming mouth. It was obvious that was what I meant seeing as I was parsing the differences between the IDF and other more competent militaries. Compulsory service (i e drawn from everyone, not voluntary) is one of the best known aspects of the IDF

Israel is vastly more technologically and economically advanced than its arab neighbors yet it consistently has poorer performing soldiers. They panic, they flee... they lose battles... they fail to take territory. Israel has never had any real ability to conquer its enemies on anything more than its superior financing and air force.

You don't know much about this topic and that's ok. don't get angry though, it's bad for your blood pressure. i suspect you are quite fat due to the amount of time you spend on this forum and I wouldn't want you to hurt yourself.
