synthetic oil - how long between changes?

Amsoil as well but I only put about 6k miles on the Jeep I use it in a year. Still do it once a year per manuf recommendation. They actually say up to 25k miles or 1 year. I can't imagine going 25k miles without changing your oil.

Glad to see some people are starting to see the light.


On my truck engien it sees 2-3k because if offroad and hgiher heat conditions. Street I see 3-4k. Motorcycle because of Air cooled gets 2-3k at most. 3k is factory specs.


3 months has long been the longest recommended max, it was proven earlier this year in test that it still stands. Thereis too much acid buildup in the engine that breaks down the additives.

My car has an OLM and it says that the car can go 7k miles on normal oil so i go that many miles on synthetic.

Yes, but don't you base your oil change according to that schedule. The reasons why they recently change to that schedule is because of the free maintenance that comes with the new cars, less cost to them while keeping the car drivable until the factory warranty wears off. You do notice that BMWs if follow factory maintenance schedule do tend to have problems after their 60K miles.

People usually change their oil between 5K-7K miles, on synthetic, depends on driving conditions.

Reg oil today can go 5k easy in most cars/trucks.

The only time I have had to do engine work basd on oil was when people would either run low or do 50k+ on 1 oil change.

BMW's onboard service reminder is based on gallons of gas consumed, it used to be a lot more, but people got whiny that the distance would jump up and down, I guess.

The longer you run the oil, the more acids build and other chemicals that build up that cause harm, the more moisture there is as it can be all burned off, and the more small debris there is that the filter can't catch. The maintence schedules aren't designed to promote the longest life possible, things are designed to fail eventually. MY failling eventually needs to over 300k. Might be also the reason people run bypass filters.

In the end its not what the oil can stand (except for the additives added to it) it's what is going to degrade the life of the engine the slowest.

Cars/Trucks have gone over 200k doing 5k oil changes on the older oil with older style motors. In europe 10k plus oil changes are the norm, not the exception.
I was a auto-tech and even ran my own shop and, as I said before, never had a engine issues based on oil except when it was run low or went 50k or so on the oil. Even some oil compnaies are now admitting that 5k on reg oil is easy. These are the same people that make money when you change your oil, not hold onto it.
