So just got a new truck and I'm trying to figure out if I should use synthetic oil or not.

What do you use?

What are your thoughts on the subject?

If it's new, you should run dino for the first couple of OCI's, to let the break-in debris work itself out of the engine.

The primary benefits of synthetics of dino oils are increased cold flow, and extended OCI. The first couple of changes, you shouldn't be doing extended OCI. Living in Austin, I'm not sure how much a synthetic would really help you over a quality dino, given that it's not that cold.

When the EVIC display says Change Oil, then you can switch to synthetic.

I believe it has you do the first change early.

With his Hemi, he has to use 5W-20, and he has to stick to the factory service interval to keep his lifetime powertrain warranty.

Thanks for the replies guys, the manual says to not go longer then 6 months or 6k miles on the oil change and to use like LTC8K6 said 5W-20 oil.

My thoutht after a little research is to go with Amsoil, its not cheap but seems to be good stuff, oh and based on how often the manual says the change oil I will only need to do it every six months.

If any of ya know any sites that review and compare oil please post the links.

Thanks!!!

You have an oil life monitor, so it will tell you when to change the oil based on your driving.

Most likely it will be more often than 6 months or 6,000 miles.

The first oil change notice will probably be at 2500 miles.

You can ignore these if you wish by resetting the oil life monitor.

You do this by turning the key on and then pressing the gas pedal to the floor slowly, 3 times within 10 seconds. Then turn the key off.

If you stay at 5k oil changes then you will get little to no benifit from Syn oil. Just use a regular Dino name brand like quaker state, havoline, etc...

If you will be doing a extended drain and/or really haul a LOT of weight then you may see some benifits from Syn oil. But use the cheapest syn you can find. All but the really costly ones are a Grp 3 (even Mobil1). Abd don't go over 10k or 1 year no matter what it says.

And don't use Fram filters. Go to rockauto.com and order 6-12 ProTec filters. They are made by Wix and are great.

Usually that 6 months 6k miles is whichever is first, so if you hit 6k miles at say 4 months then change it.

I personally wouldn't go 6k miles but that's just me.

Use the synthetic. In my view, the engine will have a longer life and run better and possibly a little cooler. And you may pickup 1 or 2 HP from using it. I prefer either Castrol Full Synthetic or Mobil 1 Full Synthetic. Amsoil is said to be good, but I have never used it.
