Because nobody is willing to let us build a new nuclear reactor. I can buy identical diamonds from non-natural sources. Where can I get an alternative automotive fuel with the same capabilities?

From what I'm seeing in this thread, you can't buy man-made diamonds that are identical to real ones yet, and when you will be able to they'll be few and far inbetween, and more expensive than real ones. They're starting to ramp up e85 production, which is domestically grown, and although not identical to foreign oil is a good alternative. Electric cars have been out for years, and although more expensive to buy and operate it seems that people are willing to pay more for something that doesn't involve "blood" in its production or trade.

1. It seems more like the next year or so will see availability.
2. Predictions all seem to point to a lower market price than for natural ones
3. If that's the case, volume will be relatively large.
4. Electric cars are not a viable alternative to gasoline ones. The synthetic diamonds WILL identical to natural ones.

Fixed 🙂...electric cars and e85 available now, synthetic diamonds available later.

No...the synthetic diamonds ARE identical to natural ones. They have been demonstrated. They WILL be available to the consumer later.

Even if you don't care about the Africa/blood-trade situation, other things about DeBeers should bother you:

- DeBeers stockpiles huge amounts of diamonds and artificially limits supply to drive up prices. They do their best to convince the world that diamonds are a rare gem. In reality they just got a lock on the market.

- DeBeers brainwashed society (read: women) into thinking that diamonds are the norm/requirement for engagement rings. In the early part of the 20th century, they paid Hollywood producers to insert diamond rings into marriage proposal scenes of films. It had exactly the desired result for them -- now society treats a diamond-ring engagement ring as some sort of custom/tradition and anything else is unacceptable.

I personally can't wait until synthetic diamonds are further perfected. Once someone figures out a way to manufacture them cheaply, DeBeers' days should be numbered.

/will never buy a DeBeers diamond

But they're not now.

My point is just that people keep saying how they refuse to buy natural diamonds because of the "blood" spilled over them, when the fact is diamond mining has been mostly automated and has been using machinery rather than actual miners for almost 30 years now. The only blood still lost is because of a few mines (very few) controlled by African warlords, which I hardly see as being DeBeers' fault. Realistically, the best quality diamonds are now coming out of Canada and Siberia, not Africa. Yet there's plenty of other products we use everyday that cost just as much or more blood than diamonds, and have alternatives (although at a hefty price sometimes) and nobody complains about them.

If you don't want natural diamonds, that's perfectly fine. Just realize that there are plenty of places to get real diamonds that have nothing to do with so called "blood diamonds", and there's no reason to wait for synthetic diamonds to become commercially available.

Could be, but then again Hallmark invented Valentine's Day because they needed a holiday between Christmas and Easter to sell cards and gifts, and nobody says that they're evil. Stockpiling product to create an artificial shortage is part of business, not necessarily a good part of it, but one that's been around as long as people have been doing business. I somehow don't see that changing anytime soon. What about that thread about Verisign, and how they'll have sole control over .COM addresses, and will be able to raise prices despite the fact that prices have been going down for years? Sure nobody is dying over it, but they're basically going to have a monopoly over a product, be able to raise prices without much regulation, and never have to give up their control over the product.

my dads friend is a diamond merchant in bombay...when i went to see him they were examing a whole handful of diamonds...it was pretty sweet.

hmm...i'll have to talk to him aboutt that, cause that seriously sucks

good choice. do not support debeers and the criminals behind the trade.
diamond is a diamond, no matter what debeers wants people to think.

as for other stuff going on being bad. well.. we need stuff like oil to keep going. engagement rings and such are vanity items.

lab-grown diamonds are currently available in several colors, but not clear (white). The other colors ARE cheaper than natural colored diamond, but are more expensive than a comparable white diamond.

"Real" diamonds are overrated. If you want to get a synth, more power to you.

In fact, jewelry is OK but overall, what is it beside decoration? Useless.

I have plenty of nice jewelry but tend to prefer the more artistic, interesting pieces. There is nothing tackier than a woman who wears a lot of jewelry. Icky. Matching pieces are the worst... very old lady.

Anyway, the best luxury you can give a woman is the freedom to stay at home with her children if that is what she chooses. Stay out of debt and don't buy into rampant materialism.

JMHO

If she is, then he needs to get another girlfriend.

He already answered that.

scribe,

your sentiments echo mine exactly. it wasn't difficult to convince her that natural diamonds (with some exceptions) are unethical. so that's why i got her this gemesis diamond (it looks better in person). additionally, it's less expensive than a similar natural diamond with the same weight, cut, clarity, and color.

Meh, if diamonds wern't marketed to women, they would just pick something else for guys to buy to 'let them know how much we lovethem'

It takes the equivalent of 100 units of gas to make 130 units of ethanol. The huge amount of land isn't worth that 30%.

There aren't good enough synthetic diamonds yet. Even if there were, it's a better idea to get some other gem. That way it's still natural, without being unethical. Ruby and sapphire are more forever than diamond anyway.

That's what I was going to link to. AFAIK it's too time consuming to "grow" a diamond like those to sell for jewelry since there aren't many people/companies capable of growing them.

gemesis is the only company that i know of that is currently selling gem-quality diamonds. it only takes them 4.5 days to grow a 3 carat stone. that's certainly better than the millions of years it takes the earth to make one.

Google Apollo Diamonds, and you'll get what I mean.

I dunno about lab created diamonds... seems a little weak to me.

Why not go for something more unique? Fvck diamonds. Stick a moon rock on a ring 😀

How many stones can they grow at once? If they have multiple machines growing them, then yeah... but if they just have one... ~80 per year isn't exactly enough to keep a business alive.
