I feel like I'm going a bit mad here; I've downloaded the Synaptics touchpad driver from the official site a fair number of times before but I can't find where to download it now. Help?

TouchPad Driver Support
Synaptics' TouchPad device drivers are customized and supported by notebook manufacturers to meet specific driver requirements for their individual products. To ensure the appropriate driver for your device, always use the driver your specific notebook OEM supports.

they want you to go get the driver from the manufacturer of the laptop.

The next paragraph however suggests that the driver should be available to download.

Installing a generic driver or other driver may result in the loss of OEM-customized functionality and other issues. We recommend you set a restore point before installing any driver to ensure potential need to roll back to the previous driver.

I'm not really sure how you take that statement to mean they're supposed to be offering you a driver to download, even if they did in the past. Just get it from the manufacturer of your laptop.

Why give a warning/recommendation against installing a generic driver if in fact one doesn't offer a generic driver. Kind of a moot point, don't you think?

"Please don't install this non-existent driver! All kinds of crazy things could happen!"

I wanted to install the latest driver because I'm aware that Synaptics had some problems with their early Win10 driver, so logically the manufacturer's 2012-era driver was potentially problematic as well.

Just because they don't offer it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Your OS comes with all sorts of generic drivers.

That's a fair point, but it's not particularly relevant to the quote. Anyway, this discussion isn't providing any way forward with regard to the reason I asked for help.

Well it did, you just didn't like the answer. :) Contact the OEM of your system. My guess would be they pulled the driver from their site after the complaints of key logging.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's it. I get it from the manufacturer's site if I want it. And that's a really big IF.
