1): It is always a problem, especially if on the front wheels.
2): You should be able to tell a flat tire while driving especially on the front wheels
as the steering gets heavier and the car tends to pull to that side. On the rears
it is possible to be almost flat and never know it. So if in doubt, check the pressure.
A visual check will not always show a low tire.
The symptoms can vary by the tire size, how flat it is, and which tire. When my truck's tire went flat it felt like I broke an axle. My cousin's car with low profile tires we discovered it when we hit a pot hole and it was unusually rough.
Start with a visual inspection. You can use a tire pressure gauge to actually check the tires. Make sure to check them when they are cold.
I know everyone is giving you a hard time, but don't feel too bad, I have seen lots of people driving around with severely under inflated tires. Seriously though, it is a big deal.
