Give them a call and ask. I don't think it would be a stupid question. If you're not going with your class or anything, and just taking your chick, dress up. Make a night of it.

It depends on where it is being held at, what type of event, where you sit and what not. Sometimes a symphony may hold a gala night that is basically a black tie affair, but that is usually reserved for private donors to the symphony and other high rollers.

For the most part, some slacks and a nice shirt will do, maybe a tie. If you are sitting closer to the ochestra pit in some more expensive seats then you may want to consider slacks, tie and maybe a jacket.

AHh, the Symphony. If it's a matinee, general, a collared polo-style shirt & slack work, for evening, shirt & tie affair (As someone said earlier, no jacket needed, and only a tux for like the "gala"; I'll wear a jacket for some of the more "eventful" performances, like the first/last of the season. Women are much easier, general "work casual" attire works for them; stay away from shorts/non-dress pants/skirts & t-shirts, and they are golden.

I really enjoy going to the "symphony in the park", where it's a t-shirt & shorts :)
