Sympatico's caps are in place

Damn... I cancelled my sympatico account a month late and now I'm gonna have to deal with the 5GB/month download limit with this DSL ISP. They charge you a month in advance so I still have until the 25th of July before this account expires. They started tracking my UL/DL usage on the 25th and guess what... I'm already up to 4.7GB! Crap... and they charge an extra $7.95 for each GB after the 5GB limit.
Oh well... and all I've done is either go on forums or play games.. then again my connection is shared with my bro's computer and he downloads anime like crazy. 19 more days.... looks like i'll definately be going over the limit... I wonder how much I'm gonna have to pay at the end of the month :frown:

Anyone else in the same boat?

Bill your brother for the excess usage.

i believe for an exta tenner, you can increase your limit to 10 gigs.

but i know, i'm with sympatico too. and while i don't use a lot of transfer, it still sucks to watch what you have to do. i mean, 'unlimited use' should mean 'unlimited use'.

Yeah but they say it only refers to the time that you're given to use it. Which makes sense... since that's how dial up was. I don't oppose caps... I just think 5GB is ridiculous.

Limits suck... ISPs should just configure rate-limiting and give you a certain amount of bandwidth for a certain price and be done with it. I download (and upload) about a gig per day...

I don't think that bandwidth limiting is the answer coz when I go on I want the bandwidth to be there....

Here's the problems, %10 of sympatico users gobble up %50 to %70 of bandwidth, It's not fair to the others who use the system at mininum and have no bandwidth when they get on. In other words why should %90 of the users subsidize those that abuse bandwidth usage.

Here's the solution.

Give everyone 500 Mb UP and 500 Mb down a day. that way you can still download about 14 Gigs/Month and play online games 24/7 day. That way bandwidth is shared and spread out evenly and would prevent those that gobble up bandwidth endlessly to no end on a daily basis. If you want extra bandwidth then pay for it.

Although I do agree that 5Gb/Month is not that much these days.

Rogers on the other hand just increased it's monthly charge by $5. They will take in as many Sympatico drop offs as they can and probably setup some sort of limited bandwidth usage afterwards.

I am in the same boat. 🙁 According to their bandwidth tracker thing, I used 14.7GB of bandwidth in June (but only 1GB of upload)...why they give you 5GB upload is beyond me. I'd rather have say a 2GB upload and a 8GB download.

So Rogers doesn't have a cap in place? Will they? If they have no plans, I will switch...but if not I may as well just stay. There is also sympatico's upgraded DSL that is $70 a month as opposed to $44/month and it's triple the download bandwidth and triple the upload bandwidth, but they only increase your limits to 10GB/10GB per month...if they offered those speeds with unlimited bandwidth i would be happy to pay $70/month.

Are there any other options for high speed service? or do these two hold a monopoly? I've been with sympatico high speed since september 1999!

You can try a reseller of DSL. I don't know what they are doing about caps, but I believe the caps affect only Sympatico customers, and companies who are wholesalers MAY not impose a cap.
I'll check on that actually...

Rogers is kind of notorious for thinking up a plan and implementing it months later - we Rogers users are still waiting for word on when our own bit caps will take affect. The current guess is either at the start of the school year in fall or in Jan. 2003.

It's almost a monopoly, but there are some DSL alternatives already in place. Use canadianisp.com to find ones near you. IGS supposedly has pledged to never implement bandwidth caps for the Toronto region.

Head over to the Residential Broadband Users' Association forums for discussions on what ISPs are the best and troubles people have encountered, or Rogers/Bell HSE discussions in general.

Kami,

Couldn't find out for sure about the caps. But around the office we believe it is upto the provider to determine. I don't believe Bell limits the wholesalers bandwidth.

Eventually everyone in canada will be bandwidth limited that's just the future of things and yes it is a monopoly but who's in the business of loosing money and thank god there are more than one major provider.

>I don't believe Bell limits the wholesalers bandwidth.

The do and they don't. Here's how it works in simple terms.

Bell will lease lan-lines that contain bandwidth, for example.

A circuit or lan-line can have 3Gig Up/Down for $4K/Month or 6Gig Up/Down for $7K/Month ect. and there's no preset bandwidth cap so you can use it at full if you want. The provider can lease as many lines as they want, how the provider uses it is up to them but they eventually have to pay bell for the lines. The problem with the resellers or providers is that if %30 of the provider/ISP's users are continously using %100 of bandwidth then the provider needs to lease more lan-lines for the rest of the users. Therefore the cost is greater then they have to raise the users monthly fee. It boils down to what I said before, why should users who don't abuse bandwidth subsidize those that abuse bandwidth usage. If the provider can limit users bandwidth usage then they won't need to lease additional lan-lines and therefore saving money.

Rogers on the other hand does not lease lines, they have all the bandwidth they want, the probem with Rogers is growth and demand and that requires lots of hardware which cost money. Perhaps that's why they don't have a bandwidth cap but have increased the monthly fee by $5

There's a difference between speed and bandwidth... Just because you have speed doesn't mean that you have unlimited bandwidth and this is what Major providers and ISP's are starting to understand and are dealing with.
