Symantec AV 10 -- Auto-protect refuses to enable

I am required to run Symantec 10 to connect to my school's network. But even after fully updating, auto-protect will not stay enabled. The Symantec service is running and when I right-click the icon and click enable, it goes right back to disabled in about a second.

Any ideas?
